Ready, Set, Bloom by Tory Fair

May 14 – July 20, 2007
Opening Reception: May 16, 2007, 5:30 - 7:30 P.M.

CAC Gallery presents, Ready, Set, Bloom, an exhibition of drawings and sculpture by Tory Fair who will be installing her public art at the new Harvard Street Park in the Area IV neighborhood during the summer of 2007.

Ready, Set, Bloom brings metaphors from the world of competitive sports into the more personal, but perhaps no less competitive, realm of domestic space. The boundary lines of an athletic zone distort and drape over a bench. A field of sculptural flowers appears to be rooted in the twisted markings of a basketball court. Fair creates an ambiguous relationship between blooming or conversing and competitive play, collapsing the emotional with the physical and evoking a sense of "expectant waiting".

Tory Fair is one of three artists who have been commissioned to create an artistic comment on the standard park bench at the Harvard Street Park. Ready, Set, Bloom provides a context for understanding the themes and imagery, with which Fair plays, in responding to her public art site in Cambridge.

Tory Fair is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Brandeis University where she teaches courses in sculpture, 3-D design, drawing and 2-D design. She has received numerous grants and awards including The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, The Blanch E. Colman Award, Gardner Fellowship, LEF Foundation Grant, The Norman Grant from Brandeis University, and a residency at The MacDowell Colony, among others. Tory’s work has been exhibited nationally as well as extensively throughout New England, and is featured in numerous private collections. She lives and works in Arlington, Massachusetts.

CAC Gallery exhibitions are free and open to the public.
