    Salamander Use Permit

A permit is required from the Fire Department prior to the use of a salamander. Salamanders and propane construction heaters are prohibited from use in occupied buildings. Wood burning salamanders are prohibited from use in any building or structure.

527 CMR § 20.01

  • Salamanders must be constantly attended when in operation.
  • Fuel storage shall be outside of the structure and kept a minimum of 25 feet from any ignition sources.
  • No salamander shall be set upon a wooden floor unless it is raised above the floor at least four inches and set upon brick or other non-combustible material in a bed of sand at least two inches thick, spread upon the floor and covering an area of at least two feet in all directions larger than the area of the salamander. 

Application for permit to use a salamander must be made in person to the Fire Prevention office. Permit hours are M-F 8am-10am.
