The fire department is responsible to review the fuel storage installation of emergency and stand-by power systems. This applies to fuel oil systems only. The fire department does not regulate natural gas systems.
Permits-Installing Contractor
A permit to install a generator fuel oil system is required prior to the installation. The following documents are required to be submitted to obtain a permit:

Application to install fuel storage for emergency or back-up generator

Engineered plans or specification sheets for the fuel system

Plot plan or floor plan indicating the location of the generator and fuel supply

Construction documents indicating the fuel storage room specifications
Permits-Generator System Owner
Once the contractor has applied for a permit to install the fuel system, the owner of the system must apply for a permit to store and use the fuel. The following documents are required to be submitted to obtain a permit:
License-Property Owner
If the fuel system exceeds the exempt amounts listed in 527CMR § 14, then a license must be applied for. The following documents are required to be submitted to obtain a license: Important, the following documents must be submitted to the License Commission.
