Leak Detection Program

Take 20 Minutes to Save Gallons of Water Everyday!
Each year, thousands of gallons of water are wasted due to toilet tank leaks. Toilet tank leaks, almost undetectable to the naked eye, can add $100.00 or more to a quarterly bill.
Residents who suspect they may have a leak, or those who have noticed a significant increase in water consumption on their bill, are encouraged to request a Free Leak Detection Kit and perform the test. The Free Kit includes two colored tablets, enough to test two toilets, and an instructional sheet. The test is easy to perform and does not stain the toilet bowl.
Free leak detection kits are available at no charge to Cambridge residents by calling the Cambridge Water Department at 617 349-4737 or emailing Brian McCoy at bmccoy@cambridgema.gov
Other tips that residents can do to help save water include:
-
Check your toilet tank at least twice a year.
-
Turn the water off. Don’t let it run when you wash, brush your teeth, shave or wash your car.
-
Water your lawn in early morning - one inch a week is good for your grass.
-
Take shorter showers or a bath
-
Run full loads of dishes and clothes.
-
Water plants, not the sidewalks.
-
Fix all leaks.
