The Cambridge School Department is reopening the Longfellow School next week to house the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School previously on Putnam Ave. CPS closed the King School for a major building reconstruction there. The new Putnam Ave building will reopen in September 2015. This is the first building project in the School Department’s Comprehensive Facilities Plan.

The Longfellow building will be fully occupied with elementary school children. The Traffic, Parking and Transportation Department will be making changes in parking regulations around the school to safely handle the school bus and parent drop off and pick up activities and to manage the school generated congestion.

On Broadway, in front of the school, we will be removing the metered parking and signing this area “No Parking School Bus Stop 7:30am-4:30pm School Days Only”. This area will be solely reserved for the heavy school bus activity and parent drop-off and pick-up will be discouraged.

This new parking regulation on Broadway will allow for unrestricted neighborhood parking between 4:30pm-7:30am on school days and 24-hours on non-school days and weekends. The old restriction many years back did not allow for parking during non-school days and during the summer months, however this new regulation will.

To manage the parent drop-off and pick-up activity in a safe and orderly manner, we will post 60 feet of “No Parking Active Drop-off and Pick-up Only 7:30am-4:30pm School Days Only” on both Antrim Street and Fayette Street. These spaces will be located on the same side as the school between the school back alley and Broadway. After the above hours, these spaces will return to resident permit parking.
