Neighborhood Nine - Neighborhood 9
Neighborhood Description
Neighborhood Nine is a moderate-density residential neighborhood with around twelve thousand residents. Harvard Square and Porter Square, both major commercial and transit centers, lie at two corners of the neighborhood. Massachusetts Avenue, which connects the two squares, is one of the neighborhood’s main commercial areas. The Fresh Pond Shopping Center provides a regional commercial area to the west. A smaller commercial strip exists along Concord Avenue. Harvard University is a presence in the neighborhood, with both academic and student housing facilities. Danehy Park, a 50-acre athletics and recreational facility built on the site of the former city landfill, is also located in Neighborhood Nine.

Neighborhood Nine Study Updates
In 2002, the Community Development Department began the process of updating the Neighborhood Nine Study. During a series of meetings, neighborhood residents made recommendations to improve the way that the City addresses a variety of issues and Department staff reviewed changes that have occurred in the neighborhood since 1996. In addition, the neighborhood planning staff reviewed the status of recommendations from the original neighborhood study.
In 2004 the Department published The Neighborhood Nine Neighborhood Study Update: Summary, Recommendations, and Action Plan, which reviews the discussions at the four neighborhood meetings, describe recommendations proposed there, and updates the status of recommendations from the 1996 study.
