Charles River Bridge Reconstruction (MassDOT)
About the Program
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is overseeing the reconstruction of the bridges in the Charles River Basin between Boston and Cambridge over the next 8 years.

in the Charles River Basin.
The Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP) is the Commonwealth’s eight-year, $3 billion program to repair bridges across the Commonwealth that are currently structurally deficient or would otherwise become structurally deficient during the next eight years. As part of the recent transportation reform legislation, ownership of the bridges in the Charles River Basin has been transferred from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to the newly created MassDOT. MassDOT is now responsible for the design and construction of bridges in the Charles River Basin that are included in the ABP program.

Sequencing Study
The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Massachusetts Highway Department commissioned Beta Group, Inc. to evaluate the transportation impacts of concurrent construction schedules on bridges over and near the Charles River. In 2008, the Phase I was completed and of empirically determining which bridges required work, their readiness, the corridors of travel, and traffic analysis for 42 intersections to determine the impact of concurrent projects. It provides a baseline from which to compare future changes to the assumptions and sequencing. Phase II is expected to be released in Fall 2010, and will indicate the recommended sequencing of the construction of the remaining bridges in the area (Longfellow, River, Western, and Anderson.

Bicycle/Pedestrian Path Access
As part of the Accelerated Bridge Program, MassDOT has hired a consulting team to conduct a Bicycle/Pedestrian Path Access Study to address connections from neighborhoods, institutions, and business districts to and from the path network along the Charles River Basin. The consulting team will make recommendations on bicycle and pedestrian designs for each of the bridges and intersections on each side of the bridges, as well as improvements to the path network itself. MassDOT will be holding a public meeting in the Winter/Spring of 2010 to discuss this program.
