CambridgeWalks and the Hunt for Golden Shoes
CambridgeWalks is a campaign, coordinated by the Cambridge Public Health Department, to encourage people of all ages to walk for their health, for the environment, and for the public health and safety benefits of less traffic on our streets. The campaign grew out of the collaborative spirit that created Walk Your Child to School Day in October of 1999. City departments, including the police, community development, the schools, and traffic and parking; university, state, and local health providers, educators, and advocates; and community groups have all been involved. CambridgeWalks includes people in wheelchairs or using other mobility aids in its activities.
CambridgeWalks initiated the Hunt for the Golden Shoes, which is now a project of the Cambridge Pedestrian Committee. During the month of May, shoes - spray-painted gold - are hidden through the city in places where people walk. People who find the shoes turn them in for prizes donated by local merchants to encourage people to walk and shop in the city. The message of the event is that when you get out and walk you never know what you'll find.
