The Cambridge Water Department (CWD) regularly performs maintenance on the distribution system and as a result it is possible that you may experience discolored water. Some of the work tasks that we perform that can cause discolored water are: hydrant flow tests (during warm weather months), water main or service leaks, valve operation, system improvements or repairs, fires, annual hydrant flushing (typically May and June) , illegal fire hydrant use, city contract services, street sweepers, sewer line cleaning and so on.
Discolored water can occur at any time despite all of the best efforts that we may implement. The CWD does work with all other city entities and contractors to minimize these occurrences. If discolored water does occur most times you can clear up the discolored water by running your cold water tap for a few minutes. If you continue to experience discolored water please call 617-349-4770 and someone will be dispatched to assist you with your concerns.
When available we will schedule specific dates and locations for the Distribution System Maintenance below.
