January 1, 2010 a new ordinance (Chapter 8.25 of the Cambridge Municipal Code) becomes effective. Prior to obtaining a permit to place a dumpster on the street a mandatory license from the City of Cambridge Inspectional Services Department is required . A license application must be filled out and submitted to Inspectional Services. Provided that all information required as listed on license application is submitted with the application, the approval process should be completed in one business day. The license number will be required when applying for an on-street dumpster permit.
The Permit Division closes at noon (12:00pm) on Fridays. Any applications submitted after 11:30am on Fridays will not be processed until the following Monday (Tuesday when Monday is a holiday). The temporary signs are posted 48 hours in advance of the permit start. Permits processed on Mondays can not have a start date prior to the following Thursday.
When applying for a permit to place a dumpster on a City street you must submit a Dumpster Application and pay permit fee 4 business days prior to the dumpster arrival date and abide by the following:
* The applicant must obtain a Dumpster license from Inspectional
Services before applying or a permit.
* The dumpster company must be on the City's approved list.
The list is provided by the Traffic Department.
* The dumpster company must have a surety bond on file with
the City valued at $2,000 to be on the list. Surety Bond
applications are available at the Traffic Department.
* Dumpsters must be moved for street cleaning (Street Cleaning
Schedule) and snow emergency (www.cambridgema.gov)
* The area around the dumpster must always be kept clean.
* Dumpsters must be emptied regularly and covered with a tarp
Modification of date, time or location to permits will not be accepted after signs have been posted unless due to extreme weather conditions. In the event that an applicant requests a posting modification after signs are posted, there will be no refund and applicant's must re-apply and pay for a new permit.

Weekly Fee $ 75.00
Plus meter fee ($10.00/day) if applicable.

The City of Cambridge retains the right to revoke or deny street occupancy permits at any time for reasons including, but not limited to the following: non-compliance of any state law, City Ordinance, failure to comply with the above guidelines or failure to make payments.
All City permits are subject to review and can be revoked at any time per order of the Traffic, Parking and Transportation Director.
