Dr. Martin Luther King School – Traffic Signal Removal

As part of the Dr. Martin Luther King School reconstruction, the city, with support from the community, will be installing a raised pedestrian crossing. This new traffic calming device will slow vehicle speeds in front of the school and also increase the visibility of the crosswalk.

As a result of this improvement, the traffic signal in front of the school will be removed. Vehicles stopped only when the old signal was red and from our observation, many pedestrians crossed this location without pushing the button. This was due to the fact that the street has many gaps in traffic and they felt that crossing against the green was safe. However, when the signal was green the speeds in front of the school were about 26-27 miles per hour. With the raised crossing we estimate the new vehicles speeds to range between 10-20 miles per hour, an obvious pedestrian improvement in front of a school.
