Cambridgeport and Its 1812 Streets

Detail from 1873 Altas of Cambridge

Perry, Lawrence, and Niagara streets,
          Lake and Erie,
                    Decatur and Hamilton—

These seven street names commemorate commanders, ships,
and a decisive naval battle of the War of 1812.

Who named the streets? Why those names?

And what did the war have to do with Cambridgeport, Massachusetts?

In 2012, during the war’s bicentennial year, the Cambridge Historical Commission and the City of Cambridge installed historic markers commemorating the "1812 Streets."
