Randal Thurston: Night Garden
November 16, 2006 – January 19, 2007 Opening
Reception: Thursday, November 16, 2006, 5:30 - 7:30 P.M.
The CAC Gallery presents Randal Thurston: Night
Garden, an exhibition of drawings, cut paper, and
other works that artist Randal Thurston made from 2000 to 2006
during the development of his design of his public art project
for the Yerxa
Road Underpass in Cambridge.
Artist Randal Thurston’s design for the Yerxa Road
Underpass incorporates birds in flight, butterflies, and tree
branches in steel silhouette forms and etched tile on the
walls and portals of the underpass. “I want the primary
experience of seeing the tunnel and slowly approaching it to
be one of wonder and curiosity,” said Thurston in describing
his intention.
The Yerxa Road Underpass allows pedestrian passage under
the Fitchburg commuter rail line, and links two neighborhoods
of North Cambridge at Yerxa and Pemberton Streets. The
underpass is fully accessible, has improved lighting, and was
made more welcoming with public art and new landscaping. For
