Todd McKie
September 7 – November 2, 2006 Opening Reception:
Thursday September 28, 2006, 5:30 - 7:30 P.M.
The CAC Gallery presents the drawings and paintings of Todd
McKie to provide a context for appreciating his new public
artwork for the Gold Star Mothers Pool in East Cambridge,
entitled, C’mon
In, The Water’s Fine!
The Gold Star Mothers Pool was built approximately sixty
years ago and has changed little since then. The City of
Cambridge recently completed a renovation of this busy
facility, with updated accessibility, new bathhouse and pool
amenities, and added plantings. On the east and west stucco
walls McKie has created large-scale drawings of imagined fish
that have, in the artist’s words, “an air of mystery and
amiable strangeness.” McKie’s composition for the mural
carefully considers architectural edges, the scale of the
building, and formal relationships among shapes. His fish are
funny, serious, quizzical, timid, aggressive, wise,
ridiculous, and elegant.
The paintings and drawings in the exhibition represent work
from McKie’s studio from the last twelve years. While the
artist describes his murals for the Gold Star Mothers Pool as
drawings, it is clear that drawing and painting are fluidly
combined in his work, whether in the studio or on a public
building.
Todd McKie is a long-time resident of Cambridge. C’mon
In, The Water’s Fine! is his first permanent public
artwork for the City. Work in the exhibition is presented
courtesy of Gallery NAGA and Victoria Munroe Fine Art.
