Celebrate Fresh Pond Day May 9!! (No Rain Date). Schedule Added

The City of Cambridge invites you to the second annual Fresh Pond Day Saturday, May 9, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., 250 Fresh Pond Parkway, Cambridge. Join us as we celebrate everything that makes one of the city’s largest open spaces special!  This event is free and open to the public. Picnic baskets are encouraged. See event schedule below.

 A series of activities will entertain residents and visitors of all ages, including nature walks, Water Treatment Plant tours, bike rides and safety tips, an interactive literacy display, scavenger hunt, container gardening demonstration, Fire Department Dive Team demonstration, a visit to the CPS Maynard Ecology Center and more.  There will also be dog licensing (prior proof of rabies vac. required), voter registration, a pedi-cab for senior citizens, sign-up table for free home energy audits, recycling information, plus books and nature guides for checkout from Cambridge Public Library.

Parking will be very limited at the event location.  Alternate parking will be available at the Tobin School, 197 Vassal Lane, Cambridge.  Free shuttle buses will be running from Alewife T Station (check for signage). MBTA public transportation is also optional from Harvard Square, with bus #72, 74, 75 & 78 stops at Fresh Pond. The Citywide and North Cambridge Senior Centers will offer transportation for seniors and/or wheelchair bound persons). For more information, visit www.cambridgema.gov or call 617-349-4339.

EVENT SCHEDULE*

Water Treatment Facility Tours-11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Water Treatment Facility Lobby (1 hour)

 

Lusitania Meadow Wetland Plant Tour-11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., Representatives from the New England Wildflower Society will be on hand to lead tours and teach about native wetland plants, and species identification! There will also be an informational display set up at the Lusitania Meadow.

 

Cambridge Fire Department Truck Company Demonstration- 11a.m, Water Treatment Facility Parking Lot.

 

Cambridge Fire Department Paramedics Unit Demonstration-12p.m., Water Treatment Facility Parking Lot.

 

Cambridge Fire Department Dive Team Unit Demonstration- 1p.m., Fresh Pond Reservoir and the Water Treatment Facility Parking Lot.

 

Cambridge Fire Department Engine Company Demonstration- 2 p.m. Water Treatment Facility Parking Lot.

 

Garlic Mustard Weed Out-11 a.m-3 p.m., Meet on the hour at the Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation table.

Garlic mustard is easy to pull, so you can make a real impact in a short time. Garlic mustard snacks will be served!

 

Native Plant Walks with Ranger Jean- Meet at the Ranger station every half hour for a guided tour of native plant beds along the perimeter road.

 

Fresh Pond Reservation Story Walk - All day, Beech Path to the Butterfly Meadow. Read “I Went Walking” by Sue Williams while enjoying the great outdoors!  Follow the pages of the story along the Beech Path to the Butterfly Meadow!

 

Fresh Pond Reservation Scavenger Hunt -All day,  Pick up map in the front parking area and learn about the natural and human history of Fresh Pond while walking around the perimeter road. There will be groups of student volunteers to direct people and answer questions.

 

Maynard Ecology Center Open House, All day, Maynard Ecology Center, Neville Place

This open house will feature hands-on science activities for visitors!

 

GIS Display – All day, Cambridge Water Department Lobby

 

Fire Department Equipment Display- All day, Water Treatment Facility Front Parking Lot.

 

Additional activities on-going throughout the day at Fresh Pond Reservation include free bike checks and tune-ups, dog licensing and owner information, bike rides with the Cambridge Bicycle Patrol, recycling activities and demonstrations, City Sprouts and Cambridge Arts Council displays, voter registration and information, Lead-Safe information, and a Golden Shoe search! Make sure to check out the lobby of the treatment plant for informational displays, and the Reflections on the Pond Art Show!
