Same Sex Marriage Update 4-28-04. Premarital Blood Test Information

In Goodrich vs. the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that same sex couples are entitled to choose to be married.  The Court delayed the entry of judgment until May 17, 2004 to give the Legislature time to make any necessary changes to the marriage statutes.

To date, the marriage statutes have not been changed.  If no changes are made before May 17, 2004, the present rules for marriage will apply to same sex couples as well as heterosexual couples.  To see the requirements for obtaining a marriage license, go to http://www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/~CityClrk/marry_lic.html.

Premarital Blood Tests Offered in Cambridge

Anticipating high demand for marriage licenses in May, the Cambridge Public Health Department will offer premarital blood tests from May 5 through May 20.

On May 17, the City Clerk’s Office in Cambridge will begin accepting marriage license applications from same sex couples. Under state law, all individuals applying for a marriage license in Massachusetts are required to have a premarital blood test.

“It is our obligation to make these services available to gay and lesbian couples so they don’t experience additional obstacles in exercising their right to marry,” said Harold Cox, Chief Public Health Officer for the City of Cambridge.

The Cambridge Public Health Department will schedule tests from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on:

  • Wednesday, May 5 and Thursday, May 6
  • Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13
  • Wednesday, May 19and Thursday, May 20

To set up an appointment or for more information, call 617-665-3811.  The Health Department is located on the ground level of the Windsor Street Community & Health Center at 119 Windsor Street (near Main St.). The cost is $25 per person. Please make sure to call for an appointment in advance.

Premarital blood tests can also be obtained from health care providers and at the Mount Auburn Hospital Walk-In Clinic, 330 Mount Auburn Street.  Walk-In Clinic hours are 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (weekdays) and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (weekends).  For more information, call the Walk-In Clinic at 617-499-5065.
