Legendary Salsa artist Willie Colon performs in a free concert on Wednesday, July 21, from 7-10:30pm, in Cambridgeat the corner of Vassar and Main Streets as part of Cambridge’s “Unconventional Celebration,” a month long series of events.
Local salsa band Kilombo Mambo, a hometown favorite who can be enjoyed weekly at the Green Street Grill, is the opening act for the show. Jose Masso of NPR’s popular “Con Salsa” program has signed on to emcee the event. Before the concert, local professional salsa dancers will lead a free salsa lesson from 7-8pm.
This will be Colon’s first performance in Cambridge in over 20 years. The legendary artist, a native of the Bronxwith Puerto Rican grandparents, has fused his musical talent, a passion for humanity and the community, and his political activism into an extraordinary multi faceted career. Known for his music and passion, Colonsays, “It’s not just the music. It’s also about our collective aspirations to make this a better world.”
In addition to the free concert, Colonwill lead the crowd in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for Salsa Dancing. The previous record was set on Oct. 19, 2000 at Barcelona, Spain, with 3,868 people salsa dancing for 5 minutes. Those who wish to participate in the world record-setting effort must be at the concert site no later than 8:45pm.
