ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Community Development Department (CDD) is the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. Encompassing the Housing, Economic Development, Community Planning, Zoning and Development, and Environmental and Transportation Planning divisions, CDD's mission is to foster a livable, sustainable, and equitable community. CDD engages and collaborates with community partners, other government agencies, and residents to make Cambridge a desirable place to live, work, learn, play, and innovate.
The Transportation Project Planner will manage and oversee:
- multi-modal, sustainable transportation infrastructure projects.
- regional transportation planning processes.
- other projects or initiatives as needed.
The project planner will work closely with Community Development Department and other city staff, regional state and federal transportation agencies, community groups, and local business representatives. The Department utilizes a team approach to project implementation, and the ideal candidate should be equally comfortable acting as a team member and team leader on their projects. Essential Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Coordinate and manage consultant contracts and overall process for the design of major infrastructure projects, principally street improvement or off-road pathway projects;
- Manage all project activities, budgets, reviews and schedules so projects meet city goals;
- Review project plans and construction documents, project impacts, and traffic management and maintenance plans as needed;
- Develop project outreach strategies and manage extensive public engagement processes on project design and implementation; work closely with affected residents and businesses to keep them informed of and seek consensus on project activities;
- Respond to Council Orders and present programs, projects, and processes to the City Manager and the City Council as needed;
- Act as liaison to regional transportation planning groups and initiatives and represent the interests of the City;
- Participate in and coordinate feedback to state and federal agencies, related to funding of projects on the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), Capital Investment Program (CIP), and other capital planning programs, as well as grant programs through work with state and local transportation agencies;
- Contribute to goal-setting and development of new priorities for the City's transportation program through a division-level strategic planning process;
- Perform other duties as required, which may include field work and numerous evening and occasional weekend meetings and events.
- Coordinate closely with and help manage, as needed, the city's transit planning program.

- A bachelor's degree in transportation planning, engineering or related field with a minimum of 7 years directly relevant professional experience. A Master's Degree in a related field may be substituted for 2 years of experience.
- Strong understanding of multi-modal transportation planning and design needs in an urban setting.
- Strong understanding of progressive roadway design elements, and environmental regulations needed.
- Excellent project management, presentation, computer, writing and analytical skills. Ability to explain complex technical information to lay audiences.
- Demonstrated experience in managing consultants and overseeing the production of designs and construction documents for sustainable transportation infrastructure.
- Ability to review plans, work with effectively with a diverse team, coordinate projects, and understand cost estimates required.
- Good negotiation skills and an ability to achieve consensus among diverse groups.
- Demonstrated ability to function as a team member as well as project manager strongly desired.
- The City of Cambridge's workforce, like the community it serves, is diverse. Applicants must have the ability to work and interact effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
- Knowledge of the Cambridge community is helpful.
- Some understanding of public transit planning and data analysis as they relate to transit improvements.
- Professional Engineer's license or AICP certification a plus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involved is primarily indoors in a professional office setting although some work may be outdoors including construction sites and congested city roadways. The job requires participation in a substantial number of evening meetings and flexibility to attend on short notice, if needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to read and analyze large quantities of information. Must have sufficient mobility to get back and forth from office to off-site meetings.
RATE: $78,385 - $104,068/ year + excellent municipal benefits package
