Hours Per Week: 19.5 hours per week. Flexible schedule with some evenings and weekend hours. Must have the ability to attend biweekly staff meetings on Friday mornings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:         

The Center for Families is a City-wide family support program serving families with children prenatal to eight years old. The Center provides parenting education workshops, parent support groups, early literacy playgroups, gross-motor playgroups, home visits, information and referral services, community building events, parent/child activities, one-on-one supports, and concrete support in times of need. All Center activities and services are welcoming and respectful of participants' cultural, family structures, and socio-economic backgrounds. The Center for Families values diverse, flexible, creative teamwork-oriented staff members who are committed to serving all families, especially those traditionally under-served.

The Center for Families home visitor will work with other Center for Families staff to engage and support families with children birth-5 years in working toward their goals. The home visitor will serve 4-6 families through case management and weekly home visits.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Full participation in the Department of Human Service Programs' mission to eliminate racism within our department.
  • Outreach to all Cambridge families with infants with a specific focus on those that are traditionally under-served
  • Facilitating weekly support/playgroups for parents/caregivers of babies from birth-15 months.
  • Facilitating the Baby Massage and Child Development Series.
  • Provide short term home visits to families facing parenting challenges, isolation, at risk for depression or referred by partner agencies.
  • Provide opportunities for parents to:
    • build social connections and create community
    • become familiar with available community resources
    • connect to early learning services and events that benefit the literacy development of their children
  • Collaborate with other agencies that are serving families with young children.
  • Complete all required paperwork.
  • Attend biweekly meetings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in early childhood home visiting
  • Compassionate in their work with children and families
  • Comfortable to travel throughout the city of Cambridge
  • Good communication skills
  • Understanding on how culture influences parenting
  • Comfortable speaking and interacting with families both individually and in groups.
  • Energetic, friendly, outgoing personality.
  • Ability to relate well with diverse groups and individuals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Moderately to very noisy classroom or gym setting with florescent lighting. Travel to families' homes or other locations in the community to offer support.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, walk, stand, see, and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to run, during play or responding to an emergency. Employees are frequently required to use their hands and arms to handle and manipulate objects as well as reach. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move a child. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to be agile in their movements; moving quickly from sitting on the floor to standing, to kneeling so as to be able to interact with parents and children and be able to lift and move supplies as needed, up to 30 pounds. 

RATE: $24.00 per hour
